I found Lila Pine inconsistent in applying assignment criteria to students.
Youtube University. No wonder she keeps the D2l empty, or else there would be no reason to go to class, we could just click youtube links and sit (sleep) quietly for 3 hours. 4 years after the pandemic and this feels like the first online class there ever was. Seems like a nice person but not engaging, insightful or helpful in any aspect.
She is a very kind professor that is super accommodating. Her assignments are fun and fairly easy, but participation in the talking circle is really important. Though she is not very tech-savvy.
She is passionate, a pleasure to be in her class.
I've had the displeasure of having Lila twice. Each class was about the same. She starts the course by talking about her work and research and... That's about it. Once she runs out of material relevant to her work, she has nothing to teach the class and can't help you. Forces you to buy irrelevant books. Incompetent as a media arts professor.
Her class is easy cuz you can literally put some "symbolism" and she will say it's beautiful. She takes symbolism to the next level. You can film a piece of white paper for 2 mins and she will like it. As long as you know what she likes, you will get easy As. This class is pretty much a joke. Huge disappointment.
The class is easy and pretty straightforward. But Lila is very technical and overly critical. She doesn't seem to see the bigger picture of a student's work and is more interested in her opinion of what she would do to make videos better. She has this really annoying critical trait that makes me wanna just leave the class half way.
A great storyteller, interesting course material, but not a whole lot of teaching.. We studied many artists, techniques and concepts. I feel that she did a poor job at explaining / teaching the goal / advantage of video art as a medium (the concept / process is more important than final polish), so you either figure it out yourself or floundered..
Really good teacher, very understandable about your opinions. Projects were extremely easy, no tests,no midterms, no exams.
Should not be teaching when she herself is not even interested and would rather be elsewhere. Usually left the TA to teach the technical stuff and disappeared during classes. Rude and critical at the smallest things of a student's work during critiques and she's not even majored in design so she wouldn't know anything even if it hit her in the face
