One of my favourite professors in the department. Extremely knowledgable and passionate in what he teaches. The lectures are really engaging and add another layer depth to the readings. Really approachable outside of class and will kindly respond to any questions you may have. Looking forward to future classes.
My heart and soul will never forget John Caruana. I loved this class and I loved him.
I wish there was an option to review Prof. Caruana after every lecture. It would be a 10/10 everytime.
PHL 661 Very interesting lectures. But the grade is all 3 in-person assessments (35%, 25%, 40%) and he's a VERY tough marker. Tests only cover lecture content—don't bother with the readings. Expects polished, keyword-heavy writing, forgetting in-person work is ALWAYS messier. Not a bird course—avoid if you don't want a challenge!!
great professor! you can tell that he is really passionate about what he teaches, which made me feel the same way. the course material was heavy at times but if you go to the lectures he explains it super clearly. he always makes sure to check on us during class to see if we are grasping it and he'll use personal stories and relatable ideas to help
Honestly, even if you skip/skim some of the readings, you'll be fine as long as you show up to the lecture. The readings are difficult at times, but the prof explains them all clearly and is very engaging. Definitely one of the most interesting classes I've taken.
By far the best professor and the best class I have ever taken in my entire life. Caruana is amazing, respectful caring and incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to philosophy, literature art and film. The way he teaches difficult concepts and simplifies them is wonderous. If there is one professor that must be praised, it is him.
not as amazing as all the other reviews indicate. tough marker, dense lectures, complicated readings. responds to emails kinda rudely. he's passionate about the course tho & each philosopher is really interesting to learn about. he instills this very fearful no plagiarism tolerance attitude all throughout the semester which makes u scared
Wasn't a fan of the course structure, as there weren't many opportunities to "test" your knowledge with quizzes or discussion posts. Prof is very knowledgeable and passionate about the material - makes learning the concepts enjoyable. Reading are helpful. Prof/GA needs to provide more feedback on graded papers and midterms though.
John delves deep into the philosophers writings and makes this course incredibly interesting. Midterm, Essay and Final were extremely fair. He preps you well for all the tests and genuinely wants to see you succeed. If you attend the lectures and take notes, this course should be an easy A. Great Prof!
