Very Poor. Wouldn't take a course from him again
Foremost and firstly, "YOU GOTTA BOTHER" "If you were to pick up a homeless person and throw him in urban planning, he could pass for heaven sakes" From the wise words of Mitchell Kosny and it's true. He is a very well known and respect individual in the planning world. Don't take him for granted. Go to his lectures, you will learn a lot!!!!!!
Bothered by how he wont acknowledge diversity struggles in a classroom and believes everyone is born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Lectures are all over the place and never clear with what he wants in his work. Doesn't use PP to teach, but also doesn't teach based on txtbk. Exams are based on real life scenarios.
Very passionate about planning. Not technological so literally no slides. Only speaks and rambles on. A very difficult grader if you don't know what you're talking about or if you don't submit what he's looking for. Very big on professionalism. Overall a great guy but he's the one prof you don't wanna play with
His lectures are like motivational speeches that can get kind of confusing, but he extremely passionate about planning. He doesn't use slides, so be prepared to listen. If you can't pass his first year class, planning isn't the profession for you. Bonus, he has good sense of humour.
He is very passionate about planning but sometimes, I feel like he lectures the same material over and over again. It usually basic concepts about planning and doesn't elaborate that much. He doesn't have any slides so be prepared to listen.
Mitch expects professional conduct from his planning students. This includes being on time, paying attention, not sleeping in class, and attending classes. I appreciate this, and I think most instructors at Ryerson are too soft, letting students rule the roost. Mitch has an amazing sense of humor, quite dry. It's good.
Honestly, I did not like him at first. In due time I realized it was chemical reaction of his controversial teaching style mixed with my own immaturity. He screams 'authority figure' and people seem to have an aversion to that. In retrospect, he's just someone who gives a sh!t and wants to make sure you know your stuff moving forward.
Kosnys job is to see if you should be in planning. You won't make it in uni planning if you can't pass. He's tough, so go to class and do the readings. Teaches you how to plan, not just write about it. Helpful if you take initiative and ask. Justify every sentence you write and explain how and why you are doing it and you'll be good. Welcome to uni
