Joyce is so kind, knowledgeable, and attentive. Each lecture was about a different section of 'the arts' (movies, paintings, even opera), and how they are covered in the news/journalism. No slides, just real examples that she pulls up on the projector. Weekly quiz, and 3~ fun and short assignments. Love Joyce DOWNN!
This was deeply disappointing. I did great and engaged with the lectures, but still feel as though I wasted my time. The assignments weren't graded at all. I got one grade a week into the final season and nothing else after that. Joyce Smith is a phenomenal lady, but I wish we'd covered more technical work. I expected more.
Joyce is so great. Each class was about a different section of news (broadcasting, investigative, etc.) We would debrief and she would show us real examples of reporters and stories from that theme. Very interesting. Weekly quiz based on lecture, group discussion (participation/attendance marks), weekly discussion post, and 2 small assignments. Rec
She was nice but never gave clear feedback, though she was very understanding about extensions. Just make sure to email in advance.
Joyce did not teach anything related to news studies, writing, or journalism. She looked at current issues and topics in the news during class and didn't provide any practical learning or implementation opportunities. Her classes were boring and I often did not want to sit in her 3 hour lectures.
Finals are over, but Joyce has not dropped any of our marks for the class (apart from the weekly quizzes that are automatically marked). For example, our first assignment was due Feb. 28, and Joyce still hasn't given us our marks back. Cannot even email her about this, because she doesn't respond. DO NOT TAKE A COURSE WITH JOYCE
- Almost never answers emails - Didn't return 30% of marks before the drop deadline - Failed to post 5 of 10 weekly quizzes on time and now wants us to do them all at once after classes ended - Did not post content for quizzes - Lectures painfully boring Joyce is still very kind and caring in person, but I don't recommend taking JRN 500 with her.
All the other reviews are the truth. All through my time in J-school i had been looking forward to taking JRN500, but I seriously regret taking it with joyce. Finals are starting next week, and we haven't gotten any marks back. She doesn't respond to emails and her lectures are very boring and unengaging.
Joyce Smith has engaging lectures, so make sure to attend. She likes having class discussions so come prepared to talk about current events. She takes forever to grade assignments though, so don't expect marks back soon.
Prof. Smith is very knowledgeable and you learn a lot in her lectures. She does not use slides, she opens up examples of media as she talks instead. She does take a long time to grade (didn't get marks back until the end of the semester) and you do need to like the subject otherwise you will find her very boring but I enjoyed her class greatly.
