Marsha is great and a quite interesting lecturer with a lot of lived experience. The point of the lecture is to get you thinking and reflecting on the documentaries you will view every single class. The tests are hard! There is one assignment and it's not so bad as long as you follow the rubric and outline posted.
She's great with feedback and has a ton of experience within journalism. Editorial/pitch meetings were slightly infuriating, but nothing to write home about. Worth checking what she's got in the Toronto Star.
She's amazing! Very caring person that wants you to succeed and gives good feedback. If you're struggling to understand the course content make sure you ask her a lot of questions, you'll learn a lot that way. Her emails are prompt too.
This was my favourite course at TMU. The documentary I made under Marsha's guidance helped me get my first journalism job.
Excellent prof. I watch documentaries in a whole different way now after watching documentaries like "Warrendale." The best part was the guided discussion following every documentary. Grading was very fair.
This class was kind of useless. We just watched documentaries and then didn't really have a meaningful discussion afterward. The documentaries were also really upsetting most of the time, some showing graphic depictions of child abuse. Tests were also needlessly difficult
This was one of the best courses I've ever taken. The discussions were awesome and you learn a lot as long as you put the effort in. Even though this course is supposed to be about the history of Twentieth Century documentaries and the NFB, more recent documentaries (by Silvia Hamilton, Candace Maracle and others) were also included. Great course!
Marsha is a great prof! I've had her a few times for different JRN courses and she's always a joy. Super understanding
I love Marsha! She's super understanding, and is always willing to give you more time or feedback if you need it. She's seems to prioritize learning rather than grades, so she's pretty liberal with marking. Even though our class was severely constrained by the pandemic, I still had a great time making a documentary. Couldn't recommend her enough!
Marsha is an absolute gem. This class is super fun and you learn so much! She gives great feedback on your performance/role during the broadcasts, and grades really easy. Mainly, she just wants you to show up and and put some effort into your work. Loved this class and I'm looking forward to taking her documentary class as well.
