Aside from her bad teaching ability and her overcomplication of the course (in theory it's not that hard), 30% of your mark is made up of 6 online in class quizzes which last 10 MINUTES for 10 QUESTIONS. Nearly all students taking her course need nearly 50% on the final exam to pass the lecture component and thus the course due to this weight.
GOOD LUCK. The textbook is your best friend. She would always make students feel stupid by answering to questions with "this is a pre-requisite". The content is really not that hard but she makes it hard for no reason. Just read the textbook and do the practice problems from the textbook and you'll be fine.
As someone who had her 3 times (once in 2nd year, twice in 4th), she honestly is just a sweet lady, but when it comes to lectures and class, it's hard. Her lectures are boring and straight from the textbook and assignments are all over the place. She's nice during office hours from what I heard.
People lie whey they say that Dr. Lu is "better" in this class compared for CHY 213. It's the same frustrating things you deal with. Assignments that are confusing to understand, tedious to do, and straight up boring. Lectures are VERY dry and uninteresting. 5 quizzes for 5% each, 40% exam (seriously?), and two presentations resulting to 10 and 15%
Her assignment instructions arent very clear and contradict each other. She often calls people out in class when they ask questions about her project outlines and encourages people to "not ask questions in class as I dont want to discuss this". She gives pop quizzes with no adequate warning ahead of time to submit any form of ACR. -10/10 prof
You get blank slides that show nothing and she doesn't post the full slides once the lecture is done. Does not listen to student feedback + very condescending. Most of the course is stuff you should already know, according to her. Study the textbook LIKE YOUR GPA DEPENDS ON IT! You'll learn nothing in her lectures, show up for pop quizzes though!
Among MANY issues I had with the course, the lecture slides were awful. Lots of pop quizzes where the correct answer was in red font. I will never forget when a colourblind student said he couldn't see red and she told him to "move closer to the front." Not a very bright human being, and she seems to get off on humiliating students.
Ignore her, and just study off the textbook (she uses the questions from the textbook publisher). Timing is tough on exam and quizzes. Final exam was 120 mc in 110 minutes, and it's in person but on your device (you can view one question at the time and cannot go back). Quizzes were 11-13 questions in 10 minutes. The quizzes are really hard.
Absolute worse professor I've ever gotten in my life. Incapable of communicating with students, no clarification for assignments, ask her questions and she'll laugh in your face infront of the class and tell you to read the course outline. Fully blank slides. yaps about irrelevant topics, dont take any courses with this prof
Not sure why there are any ratings higher than a 1. Avoid at all costs if possible but for chemistry students, CHY 423 is mandatory and Professor Lu is the only one that teaches this course unfortunately. Uses iClickers for in-class pop quizzes, boring lectures, doesn't teach, midterms/exams are like 120+ mc. Is really condescending to students.
