I was really excited to take his course but the way he marked was pretty intense and made me rethink politics. The writing assignments were intense and he gave no examples. He's a sweet guy but I'd switch out of his class or take the course next semester.
Preface: online class taken due to pandemic. Neil's D2L is highly confusing due to the sheer quantity of material posted. General assignment/testing directions are overly verbose and overly-complicated. Simple directions will be drawn out into multiple paragraphs and bullet points. Grading criteria is unclear, feedback is vague at best.
Poor marker. Marking is unclear and confusing.
Kind Prof. Does ramble a lot in his lectures. He is a tough grader so if you want to do well you are gonna have to work for it.
The whole semester was a joke, do really well on one essay and then do poorly on another essay for over citing, other people got marks deducted for under citing, doesnt really add up, tutorial and participation had an 80% and randomly deducted 20% when he reviewed TAs material. To do well on the exam you need be extremely knowledgeable.
He really is one of the sweetest profs I've ever seen, but the lectures were so boring that it was so hard to even make notes because he would ramble a lot. You can clearly see his passion and interest in the topics but his teaching is hard to grasp. Exam threw everyone for a loop too.
The course material isn't too difficult but the TA's mark extremely hard, the lectures are very dry and its difficult to pay attention. TA's were very little help with any assignment questions or clarification. Plus, the exam review which the TA sent and Prof posted wasn't even on the exam, the exam was beyond rigged! Dont take this course for real
this guy is bar none the driest lecturer of all time, I would rather watch paint dry for an hour than listen to him talk about the executive branch again, I cannot stress this enough, do not take his class or if you do make sure to skip the lectures
He is not a bad prof, but he does ramble a lot. The material is kind of boring but what else do you expect from a Canadian politics course. Attend lectures as he often gives hints about what will be on the midterm and exam. If you take good notes and attend each class, the text book is not necessary but if you slack the textbook is essential.
