If you're a good writer, she'll like you. If not, she'll berate you and even go far as humiliate you until you get your self together and start dedicating yourself to the industry. I left after second year, but I still remember almost crying when Cathy pulled me over and told me my job shadowing article was "beautiful".
I've heard both ends when it comes to Cathy. Personally, I just don't like her teaching style. There are ways to be tough and not sugar-coat without being so over-the-top. I did alright on assignments but would dread her class because I find her annoying.
If you get stuck with Cathy I feel sorry for you. Thats all I have to say, good luck.
A tough grader and rather unpleasant, but will help after class if you ask for it. I worked my butt off for B's in her class but she ended up just passing me with the bare minimum at the end, making me think she chooses final grades at random. I was rather outspoken though, and know she didn't like me much at all. Don't speak up; say what she wants
Amazing professor and person. She will not sugar-coat her feedback, nor should she. She genuinely cares and will help if you need it. Cathy will make you a better writer, and ifwhen you get a good mark from her you will feel a real sense of pride- you know you won't get it if you don't deserve it. I would take more classes with her if I could.
Cathy Dunphy's first year class was one of the most traumatic, difficult, stress-inducing things I've ever done. But once I conquered it after two semesters, I felt like a better journalist. She may make life hard, but she's inspirational and helps you build a thick skin. She also hammers key info into your brain, which helps in other years.
Known as the Tyrant, for a good reason. She'll rip you apart but she's giving you the basics. If you get Cathy for first year on your timetable, don't whine just give her some time and judge her teaching skills after 3 months. You won't regret it - at least you're getting your money's worth. Reporters need thick skin, you'll build it in her class.
Dunphy is a hard-ass - the good kind. Students get a healthy dose of tough love and 12 the time students hate her guts, but we do know that we're WAY ahead of all the other students. She KNOWS what goes on in the industry and treats us like real reporters cause in the real world editors are going to tell us straight up if our article sucks.
One of the best journalism professors. I had her both semesters in my first year and she taught me everything I know about writing an article. Her marking is hard but it teaches you to not make mistakes. She might be strict in the classroom but once you get to know her, she's a great woman. I recommend her to first year students.
