Probably my most fave prof of all time. He's super kind and a fun lecturer. Ask stupid questions and get caring answers. Will miss!
Prof is amazing, a great guy absolutely loved him. HOWEVER, the TA's for labs were spawns of satan. They're always rushing you to finish the lab when you still have hella time left (like over an hour left). They graded the lab reports like they're essays on a Sylvia Plath book and gave 0 feedback (they hand out 60's don't even tell u whats wrong).
I barely attended lectures for this class because all the prof did was read right off the slides. His midterms are very fair and he offers homework worth 5% (all you have to do is complete it, doesn't matter if it's right or wrong to get the full 5%) as well as quizzes (10%) which are good preparation for the midterms and final.
He's really funny and kind. You won't feel stupid asking him any questions.
This class was light (no textbook). Evaluations have little to do with lectures (no rubrics for anything). My main complaint is that all our evaluations were completed first week of April (including the final exam). He gave 60% of our grades back in MAY. He immediately submitted it to the uni so you cannot ask for a regrade or discuss anything :(
Has a infectious excitement about chemistry, relates concepts to real world examples and food (which is nice for the Food Science course!). You WILL need to practice equations and solve problems on your own to do well in this course, but Derick's lectures and the textbook cover the largest concepts, and give the tools needed to do well.
Nice prof. I loved his energy even though we had class at 8AM. I skipped a good chunk of the classes, and did well in this course. Quizzes and tests aren't too bad, if you did well in grade 11/12 chem, you should be ok. His lectures are paced weirdly though. He goes at a very slow pace and we didn't cover all of the topics in our course outline.
Genuinely nice guy, but he did not prepare us for the tests properly, nor for beyond this course. We didn't even get through half the syllabus and now we have to take organic chemistry without much prior knowledge. His course was required, too.
tests were reasonable and all based on the content we learned in class, no surprises. His lectures were entertaining and it was pretty easy to grasp the concepts he was talking about.
