Sonya is incredibly principled. She takes her aging self on stage and receives accolades for talking about Palestine. Her buddies nominate her for an award, and she takes that opportunity to disregard other award winners. So incredibly righteous!
She does not communicate her expectation and then demands delivery. She makes no effort in her lectures.
Sonya is a professor I have come to respect deeply. Her teaching style, like her journalistic practice, challenges patterns of institutional thinking. Students aspiring to the profession will benefit from her insight, even if the growth is uncomfortable. She runs a challenging course, but it prepares you for a tough industry. Kind. Principled.
She will make you stay after class hours and come in on days that are not class days and get angry if you can't. She will not explain assignments and add a bunch of new requirements. She will forget things that she said she will do. She does not value your time or your personhood outside of what work you can do for her
If you see her name as your instructor DROP OUT. Not a joke!!
Sonya is a great professor and a great person. I enjoyed JRN344 with her. While the course content isn't structured the best, Sonya tried to help us as much as possible. She is always available for help, whether it be in the J-office or via email. I would 100% recommend her as a prof.
JRN 344 is probably going to be your worst mandatory class in journalism. Sonya means well and can be really sweet. However, her lectures aren't engaging enough to grasp the attention of students who already dislike the course. She's also accessible outside class, and you can talk to her about your labs. She's just a bit boring, that's all.
Sonya clearly cares about trying to make her class better for students. But trying and doing are two separate things. Overall not a worthwhile class. Wish it wasn't mandatory.
Avoid at all costs.
