She does not waste time and goes straight to the point. We had a lot of guest speakers in this class which made it more interesting. She cares a lot about social and culture issues and encourages the students to do so as well.
I've had tough professors before and, while stressful, it has always made me a better student, journalist, and thinker. The torture that Professor Okeke puts some students through is arbitrary, inconsistent, and sometimes just seemed mean. The only thing I learned from this course is how to navigate a bad boss.
She possesses an unmeasurable ego, her attitude gives that she is the best journalist in Canada, in reality focuses on minorities and such, very poor scope of journalism. Her lectures are only attended for quizzes and in-class tasks. She won't prevent you from passing the course, but it surely won't be enjoyable to attend her lectures.
Professor Okeke will definitely make you a better journalist. She is understanding and accommodating while expecting and pushing you to create the best work. She is passionate about audio journalism. You'll be expected to participate by pitching ideas every week as well as collaborate with others for a few assignments.
I did not take the 841 class but JRN105 and 103. She doesn't properly explain assignments until the day of or day before thats what was so frustrating. She pushes her agenda throughout the lectures and don't you dare disagree..She works really well for some and not at all for others. Theres no in between, I would not take a class with her again.
It's not that Professor Okeke demands perfection, but that she doesn't properly explain what that perfection looks/sounds like. It leaves some students feeling around in the dark, trying to locate her extremely specific (and subjective) taste. She works really well for some and not at all for others.
Professor Okeke will make you a better journalist, professional and storyteller. She expects the best of you, and that is the kind of pressure we need in J-School to go out into the field and produce meaningful work. She marks fairly based on the work you do. And helps you improve your audio skills.
