She is an insightful planner whose course genuinely reveals the realities and practices of urban planning. For context, she does not have a PhD and manages her own planning firm. As a result, her course isn't the most academically structured, but it is the most practical course given to 1st year BURPI students. No quizzes/tests/exams.
Rude, inconsiderate, tough grader.
it wasn't that bad just super boring lectures. no exam, that was nice. the assignments are actually useful. learned the most planning lessons in this class but by myself. she didnt teach anything. would answer question with an off tone. like im paying to be here and learn. overall not bad besides the attitude.
Assignments were fairly easy, however, instructions were often unclear and the professor was often unwilling to clarify, in many cases she was rude to students who asked questions. The 3 hour lectures were unimportant, mainly recapping that week's mandatory reading. Halfway through the semester she began giving marks for attendance without warning.
Assignments in this course were fairly easy. The instructions for said assignments were often unclear and when asked for clarification the professor was often unwilling to provide any, in many cases she was rude to student asking. Lectures were not important, however, she began giving attendance marks without warning halfway through the semester.
Prof Powell is a kind person, but I do not feel like she truly is made to be a professor. Her lectures are basic, just a lot of assignments with very vague instructions, and she tend to be very condescending when teaching. She is nice and helpful no doubt, but I don't feel like she has much love for teaching. I felt like I taught myself mostly.
Assignments help to understand planning and are good experience, I also liked hearing from established planners in the field. Instructions are incredibly vague and she's nice but doesn't seem too invested in the course.
her assignments are applicable and important to real life policy and planning practices, it is a great intro to that: but she is rude when asked questions and her lectures did not connect to the assignments, she often is vague with instructions and their is no rubric for the assignments- overall, needs rubrics and better communication with class.
While I did enjoy the idea of this course and its approach to the different paths available after graduation, I found many of the presentations and information learnt in class was not applicable to the assignments this professor gave us. She is also quite a hard grader, and comes across quite rude when asked questions related to assignments.
While I liked how her course was very applicable to real life, it did NOT require a 3 hour lecture. Half the time she got the TA to teach or a guest speaker. Assignment based plus a group project, super easy to pass if someone was to skip every class (and many did). It can be a great practical course, the classes just need to be structured better.
