Had Shirley for NSE203 and while she is nice. I really wished she was good at teaching. I barely learn anything while being present in her lectures. The good thing about this course is that you can branch off the prerequisite NSE103 and still pass. Very easy course btw. You can rely on the slides and still pass.
She is a nice person but not a good teacher, her grading is not fair.
shes very nice but cant teach. at all. you gotta do the readings anyway but she doesn't do anything from her end to help you understand the material she js reads the -very brief- slides. going to her class is pointless go to any other section but hers. she is very kind n caring, js cannot teach esp such detailed courses like 111 n 203.
Shirly isn't helpful at all, whenever some people ask questions she just says “idk”. I asked for more midterm viewing days since I had a class right after her class, I kept emailing her to have another day but never let me, she only had it on the day she was available. She reads off the slides. my friends went to the other sections. Don't take her!
Shirley genuinely care about her students, she does exam viewing sessions and dedicates time outside of lecture to help students. However the layout of this course is STUPID in 1 hr we learn nothing, Shirley along with all other profs in this course are given tiny BS power points that they need to stick to. So its not her fault! DO THE READINGS
her lecs are pretty useless she just reads off them as fast as she can with some examples, doesnt rly know the answers to alot of things, and will always come across smth on the slides she doesnt know and "will get back to us" be prepared to learn off the txtbook and teach urself the material, her lectures dont help much, dont bother going to class
If you ever have the chance to switch to Andy's NSE morning class just do it.. we didnt have this prof for a good two weeks and I learned more in Andy's class then in Shirleys.. She is so quiet AND only focuses on the kids who sit upfront. Also so boring, I learned everything on my own. The midterm and exam were horrendous study as much as you can.
Might not be the best lecturer, but I loved her. She was awesome and she was very direct about what was to be expected regarding the passing grade, requirements and such. However, I will warn those that if you do take her, its a lot of self learning and the exam is application based as well as the midterm so please beware. She is amazing though.
She is kind and experienced BUT the 1hr lecture is HEAVY on content & her brief slides require A LOT of SELF-reading. Exams are application-based, but her teaching style did NOT suit me well because she often asks the class, "What do you think this means?" when it might be more helpful if she clarified and provided examples. GOTTA rely on urself !
Shirley Alvarez is a clueless lecturer, did not know the content she was teaching or the evaluations happening in the class. Would answer people's questions with random stuff that did not pertain to their question. Class is totally a waste of time. Skip it and do your readings or just attend another section. Avoid this professor at all costs.
