The course was very educational. Participation in class is mandatory and studying is needed to do well on the quizzes.
I personally enjoyed studying with this professor. Participation really matters; however, if you don't attend class, it will be hard to pass. You have every week a dictation and a couple of easy grammar tests. Regarding the final oral exam and the written one, he gives you the material to prepare for; thus, attending the last classes is crucial.
Very humorous and always tries to keep the class entertained. He encourages students to speak and participate rather than just learning from textbooks. This is a great class if you're genuinely interested in learning French, but be prepared to spend time studying
Participation is very important for your grade, and he won't like you if you never attend class; he keeps track. The textbook is mandatory and used in every class. All tests and homework were very easy, as he gave out the questions in advance and allowed the use of AI for homework, as long as you understood the concept.
I love professor Jacques. He has a habit of mocking students in class but he does it to everybody so it never feels personal and everyone just laughs together, he is very passionate about the French language and the course is very easy to do well in if you put in even just 2 hours of studying a week.
This program may not be the best fit for beginners or newcomers. The pace is incredibly fast and there is an expectation that you already know the basics. I personally found the feedback style to be quite harsh, so I'd recommend being ready for a lot of independent work.
I took FRE201 with Jacques a few years ago and gave him a meh review, but with a couple years life experience and a few more French profs under my belt, I finally have an understanding of him. He's a great prof, a lot of complaints I've heard are based on cultural differences instead of actual problems. He has his moments but he warmed up to me!
Worst prof of all time. He mocks everyone in the class. Always laughs at his own jokes. He doesnt updates his grades right away or else everyone would drop the course hah.
He is not a good person at all. He traps students into taking this course. I can tell everyone in the class is struggling very much. No one talk about it. He makes fun of you!!! My biggest mistake in my whole life taking this course. I feel like to cry. Nothing to learn in this class. Old guy!
AVOID AVOID AVOID, FRE101 is a bird course but he turns it into a really intense course for no reason. Only take this course if you are non stem (arts and humanities) and have lots of free time, if you are in STEM avoid this course by all means as for some reason it has more work than actual STEM courses lol. Also his accent is soooooo heavy
