They are a hard marker. A little nitpicky.
I'm currently taking my 2nd intensive with Shawn, he was recommended to me by another student. He is upfront on the 1st day about the required work & what he expects of you. He is a fair grader & gives thorough feedback. I would 100% recommend his classes to anyone & sign up for another course. Shawn is very supportive of your learning journey.
Quizzes were hard and focused on academic papers from modules, not modules themselves. Assignments marked hard, with unhelpful assignment outlines and rubrics. Prof expected a very high level of scholarship with very little teaching. Never responded to emails. Group project -prof changed assigned groups only weeks before it was due. Not recommended
Professor Shawn does not recognize or acknowledge the similarities between African origin, Descent, and Indigenous Peoples.
There was an incident in which a student had their mic unmuted while sharing their experience in class. I understand that Professor Shawn's feelings may have been affected. I felt that the situation could have been handled better, as personal comments about the student were made in front of the entire class.
Professor Shawn states that they are an “alley” for communities that have been marginalized communities; however, this is not the case in their class, as their actions align with a performative alley.
Not accessible, does not respond to emails and/or requests. His classes are modules, so he is basically a ghost. Seems he avoids students at all costs. Uses very questionable resources in his modules, and is an unfairly hard marker. Expect group assignments with students who have zero knowledge and have harmful views of Indigenous peoples.
Uses outdated terms in his lectures. Requires your camera on for quizzes. He knows nothing about Indigenous peoples and Indigenous culture in canada despite his "claims". Avoid any courses he teaches. He also marks extremely hard. I am a honours student but struggle to get over 85% on his assignments.
I would avoid Shawn Marche at all costs. His courses have been among the worst experiences I have had at university. He does not respond to emails, his tests require a lock down browser! Bold for a guy that claims to be Indigenous with ONE ancestor from the 1800's!
for teaching an "online" course he sucks at responding to emails. He has straight up ghosted my email several times. When I email him for clarification on the assignments (his instructions for assignments aren't the most specific) he'll just reply back with the same stuff in the assignment instructions plus a couple of sentences of clarification.
