I loved taking this class with Karyn!
Professor Pugliese is a visiting prof, she has been a guest speaker twice in classes I have attended, and her lectures are amazing. Inclusive, funny, and they really make you think. Her sense of ethics and believe in journalism making a difference is pretty inspiring.
Karyn's lectures were on investigative techniques, finding who is behind anonymous accounts, where people live, disproving pseudo science, data, etc. I didn't appreciate it at the time but now that I am in a newsroom, I keep going back to my notes from this class. My boss thinks I'm a genius. Real-world skills.
Karyn taught research methods like open source investigations (to find out who people really are online, where they live etc) data journalism, and how to debunk pseudo-science. I didn't quite appreciate how valuable this was at the time, but now that I am in a newsroom, being able to do this is critical, and I completely impressed my boss. Worth it
There was too much reading for this class. Not very lenient with extensions either. Otherwise, an interesting class with interesting topics to discuss. If you do the readings, show up to the tutorials, and follow assignment instructions, easy A. I can't help feel like I could've taught this course myself tho because the lectures aren't helpful
Disclaimer: This class is broken into 2 lectures- one with Karyn, and one with the IIJ. Karyn's often felt irrelevant and not helpful to the content of the class. Clearly experienced, but also wasn't always the most accomodating while her students were coping with the pandemic :) overall, an okay professor.
