Took CRM 285 - Green Criminology with her. The actual course was good, the content was interesting and I liked her lectures however there are so many readings assigned ( 40-70 pages per week + lecture videos + hour long additional videos like interviews or documentaries). The grading is insanely hard and it will kill your GPA, had to drop it.
3 writing assignments which are worth 30% each and 9 quizzes which are worth 10% in total. Both assignments and quizzes require you to read a substantial amount from journals and articles. Lectures are just summarized content from the readings so you basically have to teach yourself the course. She grades way too tough for a 2nd year elective.
Weekly quizzes that are extremely detailed, you have to read and take intensive notes on every reading (about 50 pages a week and you cannot skim, you must have in depth knowledge of each reading to do well on the quizzes). Each week, you are expected to take a quiz and do group work (roughly 400-500 words).
Struthers Montford is a great professor. I've taken about 3 of her courses so far, and will hopefully take more. She is so understanding, kind and wants her students to do well! I've gotten an A, A, and A+ in her courses so far. Shes great
Despite doing well in her class, I found a few problems that I wish for Struthers Montford to address. She reads her slides and transcripts in a monotone voice, which makes her lectures boring and uninteresting . Additionally, she provides very little, if any, feedback for her assignments.
Listen in class and take notes on everything she says. People think shes a hard marker but she doesn't want YOUR opinion, she wants HER opinion.
While her lectures could be more engaging, and doing a quiz and journal entry each week can get annoying, Montford isnt that bad of a prof. As long as you watch the lectures, do the readings, and take good notes for both, you will do fine. Shes also pretty helpful during office hours if you need help with the midterm or final, which was nice.
This class had interesting content and Professor Montford was definitely passionate about it. Although she was no accessible at all through email. The midterms were challenging but not impossible to do well on unlike what the other comments are saying. I think these people did not fully engage with course content (meaning the suggested readings).
Even if you try your absolute best she will literally make an excuse about missing page numbers and will grade you 50%. She gives pop quizzes every week and makes you do 60 page readings to basically teach yourself. She reads off a script when she does present her lectures that is basically useless bc you already taught yourself for the quiz.
