Rubrics and assignment expectations were not consistently updated on D2L, making requirements unclear, especially for revisions. When asking for clarification, responses often felt dismissive and not very constructive. Key updates were frequently only shared in class. While lectures were just repeat of the textbook.
No Slides, Unclear assignments, doesn't respond to emails, In-person essay exam and final exam with no study guide. She genuinely doesn't care about her student and loves the sound of her own voice. Showed up to the exam late and was making snarky comments as we entered the room. DO NOT TAKE SOC808 WITH HER. Take it with any other prof.
I would not recommend this course with this prof. She doesn't post lecture slides, requires you to read the textbook and attend class. Weekly quizzes require reading from the textbook Lectures are not engaging . There are three assignments and three exams with weekly quizzes which is a lot for a liberal class. Prof is not good with answering emails
10 weekly quizzes worth (1%), 3 essay assignments (10%), 2 midterms (20% ) and final(20%). lots of work for a liberal class, no slides given out, textbook is mandatory as each all assignments and quizzes relate to it. Bad prof with heavy accent and very liberal view. Answered "they don't pay me enough" when asked will this be marked before deadline
Dr. Vasquez-Olguin is honestly not a very good prof. While the class is easy, she makes it a point in her assignment instructions that she does not reconsider and negotiate grades or accept grade appeals. I have never had a prof state this. The class is not engaging and textbook is mandatory, she tests you on exact wording and terms from readings.
I was scared to take this class because of the bad ratings but aside from the fact that she doesn't answer emails quickly she's great! Easy MC exams divided into 3 partials, very simple and clear assignment criteria. I would say ask questions after lecture as opposed to email to reach her easily.
Dr. Olguin is fine. She doesn't provide the lecture slides, but you can get by with reading the textbook chapters each week. Exams are easy and assignments did not take too much effort.
did not respond to emails and the lectures were very repetitive and mostly boring
Dr. Silvia is passionate about this course; I have found that she awards grades for engagement with course material (textbook, scholarly research). The rubrics do not say that textbook material is required. However, I found that using information from the textbook to support the claims that I made in my papers helped to get a good grade.
Silvia is not my first choice, but she is very nice. Despite others, the papers were very easy to do and required little effort. She does not provide slides and, does not reply to emails in a timely manner. She did not have all grades posted before the final exam, which was frustrating considering the combined weight of the missing grades were 30%.
