I really dreaded this "easy" class. lots of reading, her class is hard to study for, Tough marker, boring, class attendance is mandatory, textbook required, but by far the worst thing is her participation is determined by 4-5 pop quizzes. A lot of people like her, if you like creative writing you should take her class. Not my cup of tea :(
This was my first creative writing class as a STEM student and her teaching inspired me to pursue creative writing alongside my STEM studies.
I wanted to take a creative writing class to grow as a writer. I did not improve. She does not provide feedback. Every writer needs notes to grow as a writer.
Took my very first English class with Dr. Marques (being as STEM major) and she was so so amazing. I learned so much from this class, and if you watch her lectures carefully, they will tell you exactly the kind of thought process she wants you to have about these stories. She truly wants students to succeed! One of the best profs I have had.
Irene suffocates her students in pop-quizzes, shallow and harsh feedback that doesn't feel justified, and incredibly tedious lectures that feel like you need to guess as to what she's actually trying to explain to you. I recommend avoiding her if you can.
Lowkey, almost made me quit writing all together. I think the course content is very interesting, but the way it's presented is sluggish and strange. Go to every class until you fulfill the mandatory quizzes and then leave, literally. Creative writing is pretentious already, but she ups it by 100% Take the other Prof.
I honestly loved having her as a professor, I took the class during the spring semester and she was so kind about time conflicts I had when the midterm was supposed to happen. The course is text heavy, you will read at least two short stories for each class. You won't actually write any short stories of your own but you get a better idea of how to.
I honestly really enjoyed this course. I really wanted to develop my writing and storytelling skills, and I think the best part of the course was understanding different literary techniques authors use and applying them to my writing. Her feedback is a bit vague, but overall enjoyed the course and walked away more confident in my writing.
she's tough but fair. lectures can be a bit boring but she always builds in time for students to share their work at the end of class and that's fun. participate if you can, getting her to know your name is worth it. and STUDY FOR THE IN-CLASS ASSESSMENTS!!!
