Cheryl confounds and confuses me. An extremely charismatic and engaging lecturer yet she chose to teach this credit as an asynchronous online nightmare. Assignments do not build off of one another to encourage learning and assignment rubrics are changed seemingly at her any whim. Easy to reach but spent the entire meeting on off-topic conversation.
ZERO understanding when people expressed their difficulties. Did not care one bit that we all were not understanding her assignments. Argued with students when they came to her with struggles they had, constantly graded on things not mentioned in assignment instructions, feedback comments often just said "this is incorrect" with no explanation.
made this class into an asynchronous one. DIDN'T WORK! weekly assignments that don't actually teach you anything about research. only tells you when you did something wrong, but wont tell you how to improve or what she actually wants. her requirements don't match her actual expectations and she WILL dock you for it.
The professor was bound fail with this course design. It felt like busy work. The assignments weren't hard, but the professor is a particular marker to the point where it's very difficult to know what they're looking for. For example, I got marks off for having citations and a works cited. This was a required course, but was not worth my time.
To my understanding, this course is supposed to prepare us for our capstone project in 4th year, yet I feel just as prepared for it as I did before I took this course (which is to say not at all). Feedback is vague, and it feels like she spins a wheel every week to see how tough she will grade.
This class was asynchronous, and it didn't work well. Assignments didn't provide any opportunity to learn in the absence of a genuine lecture component. Her feedback is consistently contradictory to the assignment guidelines. It's difficult to discern what's wanted from her students in an assignment. These complaints are shared by most of my peers.
Her assignments teach us nothing about research methods and are just busywork. Does not lay out expectations properly and then sends passive aggressive announcements shaming us. Not understanding. Scolded us for using bullet points when she asked us to list something. Feedback is negative and unhelpful.
I really enjoyed Cheryl's class. I found her lectures super engaging, and even though attendance wasn't mandatory, I always wanted to attend because I knew she would make the lecture fun. Her assignments were a bit challenging, but other than that, I loved her course.
She gives out hard readings and assignment, but she also provides a lot of extra help if you need. She will review and provide feedback for your work prior to handing it in. She also shows that she does care about her students, and she is a very fair teacher.
Cheryl is one of my absolute favourite professors. I had her for Black Creative Practices and CRI100. You can tell she is passionate in her role as a prof and really cares about her work. I agree she is a hard marker but she was pretty lenient in THF470 and I think she really wanted to support Black students. Good assignments if you like writing.
