HE WAS RLLY NICE but i feel like his lectures and explanations were confusing. He doesn't write on the lecture slides but instead a different document so it makes it kind of hard to follow if you're looking at past lecture notes. the exams were not super hard but i had to study alot and do alot of textbook questions to understand.
He is very hard to understand and he over explains things that make it difficult to understand during the lecture. Midterm curve was good but only bc everyone was failing. Overall terrible prof paying for nothing since going to his lectures are useless. Gave 20 percent curve though
Honestly one of the best math professors i've ever had. Many comments complaining about difficulty; his exams were very fair, if you attended lecture and practiced questions from the lecture nothing was crazy on the exams. Genuine professor who cares about his students and wants the class to succeed. Would only change the grade breakdown.
Light workload as there were no weekly homework and just 3 tests. The tests were quite reasonable, you need to attend his lectures as he will go through specific methods he wants you to use in the exam. The professor returned your marks really late for all the tests. Felt like the course was missing a list of practice questions for students.
I really liked his teaching. He would derive things and show illustrations. When reviewing parallel vs perpendicular lines he would show a diagram showing the relationship between the angles and the axis, to show why their slopes are reciprocals. His tests are very fair, 80% simple, 20% more involved, and an impossible bonus. Class Average was 70%.
I received this high grade, but at what cost? He may curve, but remember the saying "too good to be true," and you will understand that these positive reviews are sorta misleading and read like IGN reviews ("this thing needs some work: 7/10") and ironically list accurate red flags. The negative reviews are accurate. Take MH380 in Chang.
For this class, avoid him if you can. I heard for this sem both Niushan and the other prof were terrible so if it stays that way you're out of luck. Half of the class dropped the course after the midterm because it was worth 40%. The grading scheme being 40% midterm and 50% final was insane and sets people up for failure. He seems nice but bad prof
He curves the midterm and final exams. After the midterm, he stopped updating his lecture notes and teaches topics based on whatever pops up in his mind. The grading scheme is great. He didn't teach topology. He spends time teaching exponential and logarithm functions. He does not supply practice for the midterm and final exams.
As others have said, his lectures were mandatory, as he stopped providing the textbook halfway through the semester. He makes a good effort to explain topics with illustrations and will answer any questions during the lecture. Overall, this course was difficult, but Gao was very generous with the marking scheme. He made it relatively easy to pass.
Dr. Gao excels in teaching His expertise and clear teaching style make complex concepts accessible. Dedication to student success is evident through approachability and effective mentoring. Inspiring passion for the subject, their innovative methods create an engaging learning environment. Highly recommend for an exceptional educational experience.
