Not a fan of Professor Young's teaching style. Although he emphasized “relational connection,” I did not feel he made much effort to build relationships with students. The class felt disengaging and not very supportive, which seemed contradictory to what he taught. Tough grader and has favourite students. If you want to do well, agree with him.
Course content was manageable, but instruction clarity and group coordination were challenging. Expectations sometimes felt inconsistent, and communication could be slow when issues arose. Lectures were not very engaging. Feedback was helpful, but overall, the course experience was frustrating.
He was nice. Lectures are not very necessary since exam & midterm were just on readings. Classes were just to discuss them further. But, attendance and participation were mandatory even though there was like 55 of us. I expected him to mark hard, but he didn't for me personally. I think it was just luck because he tends to be a little nitpicky.
Mandatory attendance, but the professor mostly reads off slides. He expects students to engage, but it feels forced and unproductive, as discussions often lack his meaningful input. Disappointed with the teaching style since we have to show up but end up doing most of the work ourselves studying because class is just a chit-chat session
great lectures that often get redirected and go unfinished because of class conversation, readings are crucial for exam (and in general for class), lively with lots of lived experience incorporated in lectures, straightforward rubrics, funny, no papers - great class overall
This professor is a nice guy, and he will accommodate you. He does group projects and he grades VERY HARD. Everyone in the section I was in was shocked at how hard he grades. He docks marks for odd things that he personally just doesn't like so it is hard to know how to get a good grade. I'm avoiding his classes now
Recommend this course and professor
Quizzes were suuuuper easy, taken directly from readings. It's not hard to get an A in this class. Group project was the hardest part of this whole class.
relatively tough marker, however provides credit if asked. really makes you work for an A, good lecture content. slightly inconsistent grading. shane as a person is brilliant, kind, gives extensions, and caring. there is no final which is great. overall, this course was okay. it tests your critical thinking and self in relation to social work.
Great person, very caring and open to extensions if you ask for them. However a very tough marker in comparison to other professors of same or similar courses upon comparison.
