Professor Thom an outstanding educator who truly cares about her students. Taking time to discuss any issues they may have and does her best to ensure they are successful. Overall, one of the best post-secondary profs I have experienced.
Jessica Thom is by far the best professor I ever had. I feel this way because she always went above and beyond for her students. I have never had a prof before that was as on top of things as her, while also returning grades as quick. She is very easy going and understanding. I have met very few students that disliked her courses.
She makes a lot of corny jokes. Very tough grader. The GA is an easier marker than her. Shes very by the book, so follow whatever structure she teaches. Course is kind of demanding. Not too hard to get an A. Pick good group members for the assignment, because bad ones will bring your mark down.
I had Jessica for 6 hours straight (2 lectures) and I was very worried at the beginning of the semester because that is a LONG time to listen to one professor talk. However, thank god Jessica is amazing. Both classes were two of my favorites I have ever taken at Ryerson. Her lectures are engaging, informative and made 6 hours go by quickly.
She knows a lot about film, but seems to be one of those professors who found an incredibly niche and pretentious view of her subject very early on, and has never wavered from it. She has a great opportunity to talk about a wide scope of art, but stays very art-house and grandiose instead. Awful.
Jessica is awesome. Super funny and engaging. You very quickly forget how irked you were the first day when she told you attendance was 100% mandatory. She was teaching this class during her last trimester and was a total boss. And then she had her baby on the last day of class - what a superstar.
Kind and funny teacher. She seems respected by all the fine arts students. Lecture heavy, makes us do group work at the end of a lot of classes, so you should go to every class. 3 hour lecture, but it's ok because we watched a lot of clips from movies. Good selection of movie examples and good feedback on rough and good copies of papers.
I absolutely adored Jessica. She was fun, passionate and really helpful. She treats her students as equals which I really admire. This is a fairly easy class as long as you listen in class and do the launchpad assignments which are really easy. She's really approachable and is willing to help as long as you show that you're trying.
I really enjoyed taking her class. She takes attendance for each lecture. The quizzes and launchpad assignments are really easy to get 100% on. If you put effort in the final paper you will end up with a really good mark. I'd definitely take another one of her classes.
Weekly assignments to keep you up to date on the course, she is funny and handled the semester amazingly! She was teaching 2 classes that were over 100 students while she finished her PhD and at the same time she was, I believe, in her second trimester of pregnancy. She handled everything exceptionally!
