Prof. Benn is an inspiring lecturer. For anyone looking to go into the field of museology, he has amazing personal experience that he shares in lectures. His exams are essay based, which is great because you can use your own words. He is a difficult but fair marker. As long as you write legibly and with distinction you'll be ok!
Dr. Benn is an amazing professor. I learned a lot in his class and he made every class fun. He has clear expectations that may seem strict, but as long as you follow his rules, participate in class, and put the necessary effort into reviewing the material, you will do great in his class. He is a hard marker so make sure you start the paper early!
Grade based on a written midterm, a written final, and an essay based on a trip to the AGO we make on our own time. He gives no feedback on what he's looking for for the midterm and proceeds to mark harshly. It's clear he's passionate about museology but he grades based far more on semantics than on actual understanding of the material.
Cool content with interesting field trips! Amazing lectures too. Challenging assignment and exams but worth learning. Keep in mind that the grading isn't inflated and it is rare to get over an 80.
This was probably the hardest course I've taken in my undergrad. So much material, so many assignments. Prof. Benn was clearly incredibly passionate about the material but he was also too strict and a very harsh grader. Good luck if you take this course.
I took this class because of the great things I read about him on this page! Unfortunately, my experience was not the same as this class was extremely difficult to manage.. on top of this, he is an extremely hard marker, and does not care for your grade.
He is a great person and his lectures/field trips were interesting. The structure of this course was frustrating though as we had to do 1200 words per week of responses which he claimed would help better our writing but gave unclear instructions and confusing and redundant feedback. It felt like he did not want us to succeed or help us do better.
His evaluation system is abysmal. Has you write 1,200 words essays for every week, with unclear instructions on how much should be intro, summary, analysis, etc. His feedback is a paragraph with 2 or 3 supposed problems, that somehow deducts a third of your mark. I'm lucky I got mostly 70's, and he told me 80's are very rare in this course.
Dr. Benn is a very knowledgable professor and if you enjoy the topic you are taking his course on, there is no doubt you will do well. He is a "hard" marker; yet the grades do not reflect that as he marks appropriately for an undergraduate course. His feedback is consistent and excessive which will help you build your writing skills.
Really intelligent and passionate researcher. Appreciate the thought and care he puts into teaching. Feels like I learned a lot, as someone planning to pursue graduate studies.
