I'd like to preface that I absolutely ADORE Janam Mukherjee, he is a phenomenal professor, some may find the way he teaches his courses to be boring, however his speaking patterns and enthusiasm make up for it. He's the goat of history at TMU. His exams can be pretty difficult though.
He is genuinely the best lecturer anyone could ever conceive of and I was never bored once in his class. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
Janam was an excellent professor. He is very lenient on deadlines and is incredibly accommodating. I learned so much in class. Yes classes are mandatory he takes attendance and it counts towards your final grade but frankly it's not weighted heavily. The courses he teaches are interesting and he is VERY knowledgeable. 10/10 prof
This is my third class with Dr. Mukerjee, and I can 100% say he is extremely passionate about the classes he teaches and goes above and beyond for his students, especially when they need extra support. He isn't a very hard marker and as long as you make sense of what you are writing/saying he is very generous!
Prof. Mukherjee is really easygoing and passionate about oral history, making lectures engaging. Readings can be heavy, but knowing the main idea is fine. Interview assignments were easy, fun, and straightforward. Midterm instructions were confusing and could've been clearer. Instructions for the final essay could've been a bit more descriptive too
Mukherjee genuinely had the most interesting lectures I've ever attended, the way he talks is like he's telling a story. He also wasn't a difficult grader and I felt like I got the grades i deserved. There were a lot of readings but you'll be fine if you skim over them to get the main idea. I would definitely recommend anyone to take his classes!!
I genuinely thought HIS502 would be boring coming in, but Professor Mukherjee really changed my perspective on it. His classes are more discussion-based, so you need to do the readings before class. Instead of a final exam, he assigned us a final paper with very minimal instructions. He is very understanding and very passionate about oral history
I did enjoy the class but the way we are graded was frustrating. The midterm & the final paper have extremely confusing instructions. The midterm question was literally a paragraph long, it was quite difficult to decipher what was actually being asked. The final paper had no real instructions outside syllabus description and no rubric.
This is one of the most meaningful classes that I have ever taken and a large part of that is because of Professor Mukherjee. He is immensely wise and understanding with an ability to bring out the best in his students. Do yourself a favour and take one of his classes.
the first day of class a girl walked in late, stood up and then started crying as she told the prof how much a course he'd taught before meant to her and I was like, What? and then didn't really think about it until I ended up, somewhat serendipitously, in another class with him and by the end of that I was like: Oh! Okay! I get it now! great prof.
