Really great prof and very kind to students. He's also very helpful when you go to him for help! I highly recommend taking his course!
Gavin is a nice person who is super caring and understanding. He also reaches back to you very quickly and is flexible. But I would prefer him as a mentor rather than a professor; he isn't the best at teaching, and he tends to be unorganized. I feel like he swings off-topic a lot or rambles on for too long. I have him for JRN 400 rn too
His D2L wasnt well organized. Throughout the semester a lot of quizzes we did one or more questions had no correct answer and he had to boost everyones grade up by removing the question from being marked entirely. I can tell hes passionate about journalism but hes disorganized & can be pretty bad at explaining things
Gavin doesn't do much. He is a nice prof but his lectures are very boring, he is not very interesting or engaging and the TAs do all of the work and those are the people you will learn from. Gavin is just the moderator and that's about it. He is nice though and his class is pretty easy, the TAs will be your best friend in this course.
His hearts in the right place but his lectures and additional presentations for the lab teachers are disorganized. There is a lot of inconsistency with what he shows as examples, what he says, and what the assignment paper says. When listening to him, it sounds like he wants to explain something, but doesn't know how. Nice guy but not helpful.
I took Gavin in my second year of the journalism program and am now in my fourth/final year. Long story short, he has been my best professor at TMU/Ryerson.
Gavin is a caring and kind professor who constantly demonstrates his journalistic knowledge in lectures. The class was indeed disorganized at times, with assignment criteria and expectations often unclear. Lectures are rather redundant and can be skipped most of the time.
Gavin for the most part was a good professor, except for when it came to assignment grading. Criteria for what needed to be submitted changed between weeks depending on how the prof felt, which resulted in one half of the class getting easier submission criteria. Otherwise, Gavin gives good journalistic advice; his lectures are easy to follow.
Gavin is a good prof with engaging lectures but sometimes what he wants for an assignment can be confusing and there are some communication issues at times. He is a caring and understanding person who is willing to help when you need it
Gavin can be confusing as a prof, as often what he says in lectures can contradict what he puts on the D2L, which means you'll need to email him to clarify when things are due and what is expected of you for assignments. Pretty good lectures though. You will need to do multiple group assignments for the last half of the sem.
