She's a non-Indigenous instructor teaching an Indigenous class. She has decades of experience in the field working as an ally but her critiques, socioeconomic analyses and practice insights felt dated, overly simplistic and lacked the nuance required to prepare for direct practice.
I didn't have any expectation, and it was too late for me to switch to other classes. But I am glad I stayed in this class, and Charlene is a great professor and social worker. I learned so much from her and our guest speakers.
A non-Indigenous professor teaching an Indigenous course. She calls herself an ally but provides teachings as if she were Indigenous and often provides pan-Indigenous teachings that are out of favour in the field. Her critiques are also simplistic and dated. Her classes are disorganized. Avoid at all costs.
Charlene is impolite, very unorganized, and she does not give clear instructions at all. Also, she does not mark as easy as others say she does; I actually found this class to be much harder than all my other social work classes. I won't be taking a class with her again. Side note: why is a non-indigenous person teaching this course?
Charlene is sweet and caring. I found her teaching methods to be unique and empowering. Students were able to share their experiences and opinions openly, without feeling judged.
She cared about the subject matter and many students seemed to like her. I found her lectures uninspiring and full of outdated practice information. She works in the field and tries to draw on her experiences but her talks are confused and her critique of neoliberalism is simplistic and dated
Everyone in my class seemed to love her. She made this class so boring and I had a hard time keeping my eyes open. We sit in a circle with just our chairs. The material is great but she makes it boring. No exams in the class. She really cared about her students though and was a great listener. Easy grade.
She is so down to earth. I love the way she engaged all of us in learning circle through a series of role playing of client situations as well as letting us have deep and real talks about society and multiple oppressions. She genuinely cares for everyone's opinion and never judges you. You feel open in her class to share
She's ok at teaching, I wouldn't say it's her strong point. Doesn't do a very good job at explaining things, you're often left to figure things out on your own. However she is an extremely EASY marker. She has lots of experience in the feild and she brings that to class, but again not a very good teacher.
