Dr. Maaren is one of the most engaged professors I've had in an asynchronous course. She sends thorough and regular course updates with tailored comments and observations. Her online module content is well-written. The course featured an optional live-participation element. Those who enjoy English as an area of study would enjoy her style.
I don't say this lightly: DO NOT TAKE ONE OF HER CLASSES. She goes on power trips and is honestly just cruel to her students. Avoid at all costs -- and if you do get stuck taking one of her classes, TRIPLE CHECK your citations. She will actually waste her time taking tons of students to Academic Integrity if you have the tiniest of errors.
Nice person but not a good professor. Hostile environment, she allows her emotions to get in the way of her teaching. In a lecture nobody raised their hand when she asked a question, and in response she slammed her desk, murmuring rude sayings. Not professional, grades assignments late, would not recommend.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR! Prof Maaren is not a professional or serious person, and you should not waste your time with their class. They let their personal feelings about the state of the university, AI, and their own ego affect their students' outcomes and abuse the little power they have. Should not be a prof, don't waste your time
Clear instructions in each assignment and the syllabus. Gives feedback on assignments and returns grades fairly quickly despite large class size. It's easy to get a good grade in this class by participating and submitting assignments on time. End of term is just a portfolio submission, not an exam.
I took this course with the aspiration to explore the themes within English literature. As a first year student, I voluntarily selected this course despite knowing of the current ratings on this website. I wanted to learn. If you are looking for a lower bowl elective, go elsewhere. There is no fall-back/mercy for any mistakes in this course.
I genuinely believe this prof hates students. I know I walked away with a decent grade but there's no reason to grade an elective like a major. I had a classmate write an essay well WITHOUT AI and she put him under academic investigation. This class should've been an easy A, ruined my straight As. Avoid this prof at all costs.
She is much a tough grader, she wants essays in such a specific way that is hard to achieve. She picks apart everything you do wrong in essays or midterms in a way that sounds so passive aggressive. While the lectures are kind of fun, we only got one 10 minute break for a 3 hour 8am lecture. Would not recommend her or her classes.
Literally all you have to do is just show up or care at all about this class. I thought she was really nice, and graded fairly. If you are someone who uses AI in your coursework, don't take this class, but if you're a decent student, you're fine. I loved that she had creative assignments and not just essays.
This professor has to be the worst educator I have ever experienced (in 30+ years). Her "comments" are emails from the integrity office. This professor wants you to read her mind for answers. Otherwise? Big fat ZERO for you. Incapable of returning assignments on time. If your a cheek-kisser, you'll do great in her class. DON'T "LEARN" FROM HER!
