Super knowledgeable on his subject. If you don't have a background in music, you might struggle in this class, especially if you don't read music. He's easy with his grading, super passionate, and is great with contacting out of class and taking questions.
Paul (John) Swoger-Ruston is so passionate about the course. If you've taken MUS106 with him, it is exactly the same format. A mid term (which was relating the article to music), a paper and final project (which was easy). This course is VERY easy, I never went to a single class and passed with an A. He wants students to do well so he marks easy.
Professor Swoger-Ruston is AMAZING. He's very passionate about what he teaches. He's very kind and approachable. Always willing to help. He is one of the easiest markers. By far the best prof I've had at Ryerson. Would definitely recommend. No textbook required.
Classes are pointless, you don't really learn anything. It's one of those classes that boost your mark and give you time to work on other classes. There was only one class where we needed to write notes for the entire semester. Loved the final project, very independent. Got to focus on what I enjoyed. Very understanding with extensions.
Paul is a great professor - has incredible knowledge about everything related to music. He's not so great at keeping a class on track - people are talking, wandering around, etc and he gets flustered and forgets what he's talking about. He also is pretty chill about exams/tests - good chance that they won't happen! Overall an awesome prof though!
Makes you passionate about music and creates a very warm, inviting environment
Great prof! Cares about his students and is very passionate for music. Would recommend 100%
I would have gotten a much better grade if I didn't half ass the class there's no doubt about it. I'm going to take some more liberals with this professor for sure. He enjoys music, he enjoys teaching music, but he's not even going to stress your life out if you know nothing about music. Very laid back and down to earth!! Cannot stress that enough.
Really interesting guy, passionate about music, however very disorganized. Good with extensions, only two tests and one final project that you can do on anything you want. Lots of group work in class, forces some out of comfort zone. Go to the classes and read the notes he posts, you'll be good.
Great prof - a little disorganized. Study the slides and you'll be fine for the midterm and the final in-class exam. Just one project in the course, and no formal exam. Highly recommend this class and prof - super nice, considerate and helpful!
