Billie is an incredible teacher and has had an enormous impact on my development as a social worker. I know that in the future I will look back on this class and Billie often, and I feel truly grateful to have been able to learn from them. Assignments can be a bit overly detailed and inflexible, but they give detailed & thoughtful feedback.
I graduated from Ryerson with my BSW in 2013 and still think about Billie. Billie was the best prof Ive ever had. Each class we sat in a talking circle where deeply emotional and thought provoking conversations were had. If someone cried, Billie would say Its okay to cry. Crying is our first language. That has stuck with me to this day.
Dr. Allan was a wonderful teacher! I had her at the University of Victoria (2019). Her lectures were practical, insightful, and wise. She was fully committed to enriching every student's experience. Her marking, expectations, and presence in the online platform are inconsistent, which as a student was deeply challenging and frustrating.
Billie offers foundational and revolutionary ways think, learn and talk about Indigenous peoples. Billie brings her whole self to the classroom and expects the same of her students. She is kind, caring and compassionate but she is not a pushover. If you are looking to really engage with what decolonization means, than this is the class for you.
If you are not First Nations, you are her enemy. She is very judgmental and not fair at all
Billie was probably the Best prof I've had at Ryerson. After 4 years of fulltime classes that's a tall statement... It felt like a privilege to be taught by her. Kicking myself for not taking more of her classes earlier on in my undergrad...
Really interesting course and really engaging. Loved the way she expanded on text with group discussions and her own lived experiences. Only problem was wildly unclear grading criteria. Does not give marking rubrics or clear instructions - written or oral - so a lot of guess work as to how you are being graded.
She's lovely and it's a very interesting class. She's generous when it comes to grades as well. Lots of participating so don't be shy, like I was. Have fun.
All I can say is ridiculously AMAZING!!! Incredible prof and overall person. Billie is thoughtful in every aspect of her teaching.
Amazing!!! Love her so much I wish all profs were like Billie, makes me so in love with learning and exploring Indigenous ways of knowing... BEST PROFESSOR EVER :)
