I had Katy once and actively avoided any of her course sections until I was done with my degree. Outside of class, she was nice enough, but classes with her were a nightmare. She rambled on and on and on and it felt like we learned nothing for three hours. Her grading was just as confusing as her lectures.
If you don't do what she "suggests" your grade will suffer. You have to do your creative project the way she sees it or it doesn't make sense. Make sure you're clear about your project. Don't be afraid to speak up and say "actually this is what I was going for and that's what I want" so she knows you can't be pushed around. Intimidating at times.
Very rude prof. Doesn't understand you have more going on then just her class. If you explain something to her she doesn't understand it. Don't skip class otherwise she emails you as to an explanation why. (like I want to come downtown for a one hour class). She only likes the projects to be her way.
This professor has been as far from helpful as possible. None of the meetings with her were encouraging, helpful in any practical sense, but rather, she was fast to throw accusations and blame which were highly unfounded. She doesn't follow university policy by standing in front of students not leaving until professor assessment on paper is over.
Hands down the best prof in IMA alongside Don Snyder. Not afraid to give constructive criticism to perfect your project. Believes in you and gives you confidence to be the best you can be. Very intellectual and smart and it reflects in the quality content in her lectures. Amazing support and has pushed me to be the best photographer I can be.
Her lectures are extremely tedious: Her one-on-one conversations are where it's at. I feel like she needs to cover a larger spectrum of content during her lectures. 1 or 2 artists for every 3 hours isn't enough to feel inspired.
A+
One of the finest professors I have had at Ryerson; extremely skilled and very organized. Katy is tough but has definitely thought me a lot. I've developed a deeper appreciation and understanding of fine art. Thank you!
Katy is a great teacher who appreciates hard work. She supports different conceptual approaches. You can learn a lot from her if you take her classes seriously. She helped me to start thinking more critically about my projects. THANK YOU Ms McCormick for that!
Katy McCormick is an outstanding, very energetic, KNOWLEDGEABLE, supportive and encouraging instructor. She tells you exactly what she is expecting. Just do your work and you will be fine. I truly believe, the Image Arts program is fortunate to have her there. MPS 35 and MPS 34
