She is super sweet, extremely smart and very helpful. Honestly one of my favourite profs ever.
She really knows what she's doing, and she's so entertaining to listen to! You can tell she's had a lot of experience in music and film, really enjoyed her class.
If I wanted to study Chinese Instrumental Music I would have taken MUS406- CHINESE INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC (also taught by her mind you). Constrictive pre-made theses for essays and films that are so abstract the highest voted IMDB review is "... okkk" definitely inspire my love for learning. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS CLASS DO NOT TAKE IT. SAVE YOURSELF.
She's definitely a very happy, smiley person and is very passionate about music, (especially confusing operas and 1990s Chinese films) which unfortunately took away from the film side of the course. There was some helpful information, but she tends to ramble on and I found myself being bored especially because all 3 essays had the same thesis.
I was extremely disappointed with this class and her as a professor. I have zero music background and all of her essays (same thesis) and midterm are geared towards music knowledge and theory. This course was supposed to be about music AND film, i never learned anything about film. As a result, i dropped the course because i was so fed-up with it.
You need to play the Chinese instrutments for sure. She is an easy maker. Just make sure you go to class and participate. She may take attendance in lectures. Read the book and listen to the CD.
I love pop music and theory but was disappointed with the way Chow-Morris taught the class. The course material is often interesting but in my experience she seemed strangely suspicious of the students, especially during tests, which were frequent and difficult. Went to her for help with my essay grade, she was borderline intimidating and rude. :(
There's one quiz and three essays that make up your mark. It's best if you know a bit of music beforehand. I barely knew anything and found this course a bit hard. Classes aren't mandatory because she plays the movie for the essays (you can watch if from home).
First class she pretended she was a hard ass to get all the puzziez to drop. I'm no scholar but I stuck it out and all of the classes since then she has been very enthusiastic and helpful.
Didn't need to know music going into this course, but did need to do some honest studying. People complaining heard it was a bird course from the other section's prof-no essay there. Dynamic teacher who knows her stuff and wants students to learn. Students who complained mostly didn't take notes or missed classes. Too bad for them! Lovin it.
