If I had known to switch out of his class sooner, I would have. He dismisses students bluntly, is unclear in his instructions and is very self-entitled. It's either you do things his way, or you get a terrible mark. Every other journalism prof I've had works with your piece to make it your own. He works to make it HIS own. Switch now if you can.
Not clear at all, does not answer your questions or concerns properly. Very self-entitled and immediately dislikes anyone who disagrees with him. Taking his class was painful. He's also a tough marker and gives vague or no feedback at all, doesn't even help much with improving your work in the course and leaves it up to you. Try to switch out.
Alex is nice in class but I can't help but notice condescension in one on one sessions. Unless you're the type of student who likes doing journalistic assignments to the letter of the grading criteria, I'd advise switching TA's for JRN124. I don't think Alex cares about what his students think. Not the worst, but certainly not the best. Get Cathy.
Was really excited about this class but by the end of semester, hated it. This guy only talks about himself, and is very inconsistent in marking, teaching, everything. Every lab felt like a huge waste of time. He'll crush your ideas and talk down to you. That's be okay if he was a decent journalist. Get out while you can.
I had Alex for feature writing and he really wasn't that bad. He was always willing to help with assignments. Chill atmosphere too.
Amazing prof last year. Alex gave me detailed advice when I was unsure about two assignments. He was an excellent teacher and very helpful with the feature. And always available by email and cell phone.
For the sake of site guidelines and character limit I will keep this rating simple. This prof is terrible. I really wish that Ryerson would remove him from the faculty. If you are in his class good luck! Their is a difference between marking hard and unjustified his grading schemes are unjustified. Once again good luck!
I made the serious mistake of correcting him a couple times in class (I did it nicely) and all the other students agreed with me. He now treats me like sh*t and doesn't answer my emails. He also has a frightening sense of self entitlement!
Every instructor has issues especially if you are looking for an easy ride. Sure there were some problems but I was glad we had to take this class
Just another example of unprofessionalism at Ryerson.
