I enjoyed this course as an engineering elective! It gave perspective to the profession and it wasn't too hard to follow the coursework. With all the other work I had to do, the weekly readings could be overwhelming, but they were very useful for following along with the class and an easy mark.
This class was a bit odd as none of the content from class had anything to do with the graded essays. You can do well not going to class (which was boring/unstructured) and just following the assignment instructions. He is a relatively easy marker but if you are looking to actually learn anything useful about sci-fi I wouldn't recommend his class.
Avoid taking Sci-Fi with Hogan if you actually want to learn about it. Out of 3 essays, only one of them was based on anything about Sci-Fi. Be ready for a LOT of Freud. Take it if you want a class where you don't need to attend lectures at all. And don't bother buying the books in the syllabus, they have nothing to do with assignments.
Great professor and awesome course. The lectures weren't mandatory but they were pretty interesting so I attended most of them. Course workload wasn't too high and consisted of two 3-page essays and one 6-page essay. 4 stars instead of 5 since I don't like his policy of no laptops/tablets allowed for notetaking.
His lectures and readings don't actually relate to any of the content that the assignments are based on. Extremely difficult marker but also provides an ample amount of writing and editing resources, and is possible to do well if you put in the effort. Has a zero-tolerance for technology policy in his classes.
Colman is really engaging using lectures but a hard marker
Overall good prof. Answers emails quickly and is very interactive in class. When analyzing books/films in class it can be hard to understand how he makes his connections as he relies on his heavy analysis to explain stories rather than summarize whats its about. He is a hard grader and doesnt give out a lot of As. Its hard to do very well.
Very fun class not mandatory but he is a hard marker. Annotations were a guaranteed A and were fun to do! He was very enthusiastic in his lectures and the content was very rich however he doesn't offer much help with anything or explain anything.
Science fiction with him was eye-opening! His lectures were always insightful. They were not mandatory, but I always made sure to attend. And although sometimes I had no idea what he was talking about, it always led up to something bigger. He was a kinda tuff marker, but you'll be fine. Always gave feedback. Mans really knows his stuff.
The lectures were always really intriguing, and he had a great sense of humour throughout the course. It can be a lot to process, but if you're interested in exploring the psychological side of storytelling, I would definitely recommend this course. Great class, and fantastic teacher!
