I really wanted to enjoy her class, but the final is worth 50%, midterm is graded by a TA, and she expects you to have *her* interpretation of the readings. She doesn't correct students who make incorrect/misleading comments so its really hard to acc know how to do the exams (expects full formal essay format with a well-developed thesis in 2hrs)
Dr Podnieks is one of those interesting professors who are very passionate; however, it does not always translate to the lectures. In all sincerity, I truly believe she cares deeply about her students and wants them to succeed. Yet her lectures are often challenging to get through, and her grading came across as very random at times.
Some of the books were quite dense, but Professor Podnieks always provided clear explanations and analyses. Better than I expected.
Professor Podnieks is great. Her detailed lectures help a lot with assignments, especially the final essay.
Really interesting lectures. Podnieks knows the books very well, and has a lot to add to your reading of these books. Just wish the final essay wasn't worth half of your grade.
This is my first class with Professor Podniecks; I love it so far! Almost done with the semester, and I've only missed around 3 or 4 of her classes, HOWEVER, I have been doing well (80s+ lowest mark was a 75%)! Honestly, I feel as long as you do your readings and at least make an effort to come to the lectures, you are golden. No complaints!
The thing is, Podnieks is actually a fair grader, however, the marker who she sends off your final to is not a fair grader!! So you could be doing very well throughout the class but when the assignments that actually matter come along, you will have to put in a lot of work to even get a decent grade.
Professor Podnieks' capstone course was the best way to finish off my degree, she is very knowledgeable and passionate and she values her students' success. She selected interesting books to be studied and she clearly outlined what she expected for each project. She also gives timely feedback on each assignment and helps you improve.
There were a lot of dull readings for this course, but Dr. Podnieks goes really in depth in her lectures to make sure you understood the content of them. She's clear in her expectations and is a fair marker. You do have weekly participation activities so you have to do to class for those marks.
Professor Podnieks is not the greatest prof, but she's fair. The books read in this particular class were long and boring in my opinion but she did analyze them in class well in order to set her students up for success. She defers most grading to a marker but the things she does grade are graded fairly. You will have to pay attention to pass.
