Henstra makes grading very accessible. It's up to you what grade YOU want to receive. Her contract grading style guarantees you a passing grade as long as you upload your notes to the discussion board at the end of class. If you want to receive a grade higher than a passing grade, you can complete an assignment, proposal, and final project.
This prof does not care for students GPA. It is impossible to get an A, which is crazy for a mandatory third year course. Would not reccomend her, very rude and a GPA destroyer.
very attendance heavy, however I found that her assignments were pretty straight forward and not difficult to do. The issue with this class is the difficulty in the final exam which does not guarantee even a b+ in the course because of her contract grading. Feels like she treats this class as highschool, doesn't care about students GPA
Sarah Henstra does not care about her students. She does not "teach". Rather, she expects you to teach yourself all the material and come to class an expert. Asking questions in class will get you an eyebrow raise and a condescending comment about doing your readings. It seems her personal mantra is to agree with her, and you'll pass.
Prof. Henstra's class was one of the worst I've had at TMU. She has mandatory attendance. If you miss a class, regardless of the reason, she will be rude to you. Overall, she came across as very cold. She is SUPER condescending during class discussions. She also claimed that you cannot get an A in her class; great for a mandatory course.
Hated this class and her teaching style. Felt like I learned nothing
I enjoyed Professor Henstra's creative approach to this class and the assigned novels. She used threshold grading instead of a traditional grading structure which I personally didn't like, but others might find it refreshing.
The way she set up this course was really fun and interesting. I miss her as a Professor, definitely took her for granted. Her class was stress-free
I truly don't know why this professor has so many bad reviews. I had her this semester for ENG400 and she was amazing. Super nice and always there to help. Some of the readings can be difficult but they make more sense once she goes over them in class. Would definitely take another one of her classes!
Took The Novel after Henstra's return from sabbatical. The best part was the assigned novels; I'd only suggest this course if you enjoy reading and fiction. I personally received productive feedback. Lectures were critical to my understanding of the novel and what Henstra was looking for in the midterm exam and the ongoing cumulative assignment.
