Toop runs strict no phone/no distraction rules in his class but it only helps you stay engaged in the lectures. Makes you feel super comfortable to participate in class, even when a student says something dead wrong he tries to make you feel like you're on the right path. All around good prof if you're into philosophy and willing to do some work
He's actually a massive a hole and likes arguing with his students
I did not like his teaching style because he would give so many readings for a class that is an elective. I should be worrying about my other important classes but it was hard when you have so many readings for one specific class.
he is very strict about cellphone use and being late to class, but he really is a reasonable and kind prof. his lectures can be a little boring but his teaching style is just not for everyone. theyre very lecture heavy so make sure youre there or you make a friend to give you GOOD quality notes. pretty much everything said in class is fair game.
I met one of my best friends over our mutual hatred of this class. He knows what he's talking about, but he is the ONLY one who knows what hes talking about. If ur looking for a prof who rambles his way through class so u can go home to do everything by yourself, this class is for you. Genuinely ruined my love for philosophy, avoid it at all costs.
2nd hardest PHL class Ive taken. Not because the material was difficult, but because theres SO many readings and he makes the exams very challenging (cumulative final). He allows prepared notes for them but when you are taking other classes you simply dont have the time during finals to create meaningful notes for EVERY reading. Very smart guy tho
Very reading heavy class and his lectures weren't posted on d2L so attendance was mandatory. Could sometimes go off on a tangent, but covered every topic needed for each individual reading. He's a pretty tough and slow grader, but did provide some useful feedback. Only had 4 marks with the exam being 40%, so that sucked. Be prepared to read A LOT.
Clearly knowledgeable about philosophy. I respect this. HOWEVER. the readings are not easy and usually very long. He doesn't explain or go over in a way that is easy to grasp. Readings take up a lot of personal time. If asked a question or answer a question he will say that its wrong even when you have right idea but don't word it the way he would
Not good, he just likes to hear himself talk. He goes on tangents and you don't even realize when he's done talking about nothing and started talking about the subject. He is kind when you answer in class, but often takes things literally and says your answer is wrong because you used one wrong word. Hard marker too. Just overall unpleasant.
Paying for this guys class is like paying for someone to rob you. This professor cannot teach for the life of it, and refuses to improve his slides
