Unhelpful. Oblivious personality. Does not give clear feedback. Repeats same things w/o clear pointers for improvement. Discussing further does not help either. Misunderstands questions and reiterates vague instructions. Somewhat unpredictable. Natural talent and previously learned skill is how you succeed in this class, not from his guide.
Prof Murray is retiring but he's a good prof. Sometimes tricky to grasp philosophical concepts, but he was super engaging in class, answering questions, explaining, making real curent connections. Attendance was not mandatory, grading made sense.
If you've never done philosophy this will not be a good intro class to take. Though the prof is really nice, he only reads quotes from the book which can make is difficult to understand what is happening.
The majority of people that I met in this class who were taking philosophy for the first time, had absolutely no clue what was going on the whole semester, myself included. The lectures were useless and only further confused people. The slides were not at all helpful. Online sources were the only way to understand any of the content. Harsh marker.
There was a mandatory debate assignment but not everyone had to speak so that is good for the shy ones. But, he did mark the essays pretty hard but it was reasonable. He's overall a cool guy.
Bob is a funny guy but doesn't clearly explain what he wants (it's for you to agree with him) and seems to have trouble understanding what students say in class, as he immediately mis-quotes or misrepresents what they said and then goes on about that for a while. Not a great prof. Cool textbook by Korsgaard. maybe just read that.
Decent lecturer, with a sense of humour. As head of the department, he has a vested interest in giving a broad and in-depth view of the ideas studied which gives a great sense of the progression of philosophy over time as an academic discipline. Lots of reading, and lots of opportunity for discussion. Pay attention, take notes, go to office hours.
Very unorganized and unclear. His powerpoints are almost always out of order and are mostly direct quotes from the textbooks. He did give good feedback on the essays. You can pull off a decent grade without actually doing any work. He really does care about students though which is a plus. But it doesnt make up for the content of the lectures.
Seventeen thumbs down. So dry and repetitive and such a hard marker for what tiny amount he teaches. Never taking him again
I was disappointed as I had selected this professor due to his great reviews. I experienced a 15% drop for my mark in the course, which he had admitted was due to the TA marking the latter half of the course for our section. When I went to speak to him, he admitted I could have gotten a higher mark, however was unwilling to change anything.
