He can be intense at times but Journalism itself is intense.. so he is getting us ready for the real world. He is a gem and I learned A LOT from his class, if you do all your work you will surely get an A, he's a fair marker and chill tbh
The best class Ive taken at Ryerson. Rob is an incredible professor - you can tell he deeply cares about his students. He challenged me to think outside the box in a way no prof has. Youll contribute to real investigations the Toronto Star is upto - a huge opportunity to get your foot in the door before you even graduate. Really recommend!
I have a lot of respect for Rob. He knows a lot of stuff and can guide you in the right direction if you have the proper attitude for learning. A solid teacher who cares deeply for his students but also leaves you enough room to figure stuff out on your own. I highly recommend!
THE class to be in if you want to get into investigative journalism. Prof is one of the top investigative reporters in the country and teaches you how to approach stories differently. He cares about his students and the craft. The class is real, hands-on investigative experience hard to come by elsewhere. Textbook is super handy, hold onto it.
He thinks highly of himself, not very approachable, unavailable outside class. The textbook which he co-wrote is mostly how to look stuff up online, it outdates quickly; you could save $ by just googling, but he forces you to buy it. Class feels like its free labour for the Toronto Star or an unpaid internship where you do his research.
It's the toughest course ever, but I learned the most! English isnt my first language and I was inferior to my other classmates in every way. But Rob has always treated me very fairly and tried his best to help me. I learned a lot from him when he corrected my mistakes. After this semester, I feel my journalistic skills have improved in many ways.
Rob is a great professor and a great guy. He'll go to bat for you when you need him to. Reliable, responsive and quick to praise hard work. A privilege to work and learn from.
Rob is a distinguished investigative reporter who worked on the Panama Papers and 100 other groundbreaking stories. Take his class if you want to do real work. I ended up with a bunch of A1 bylines in the Toronto Star. The investigative reporting workshop is pretty much an internship.
Rob is an interesting character -- you'll be split on how he teaches. For one, he has very little ability to think outside of his own experience. He's passionate about his work and does try to be as fair as he can BUT many will be frustrated by his the pigheadedness + not understanding that students are students. Proceed with caution!
