Goes the extra mile to help a student, he once came to school on a Saturday to help me. Fair marker and always pushes you to be a better lighting designer. Unique personality maybe not for everyone but for me he was inspirational.
If you take Sholem's class be prepared for him to fill up your inbox with constant emails about things nobody cares about. He will also begin each lecture by banging a stick on the ground, which is just weird. If you can avoid taking his class I would highly recommend it.
Sholem is a well-respected professor. He puts up office hours for students in need. His experience in theatre lighting design amazingly transcribes to what he teaches and his stories in the industry definitely support what he's trying to teach, which makes it more interesting. He makes sure EVERYONE understands the lesson. He's here to support you.
Overall good guy, interesting to listen to, tough but fair. Would recommend.
Sholem cares a lot about his students. Assignments and criteria are extremely clear and detailed. Sometimes struggles to clearly explain concepts, though does make good use of analogies. Course has a LARGE group project. Heavy content in a short time, come to class. He brought in an amazing guest speaker. He often (unfairly) prefers closed laptops.
Sholem is a little snippy at times but overall is known as an incredible lighting technician all over! He is extremely fair as long as you pay attention and follow his detailed directions EXACTLY. He posts everything on blackboard, gives you an amazingly detailed review and his exam is long but fair and has some pretty comical questions! Amazing!
Incredibly knowledgeable about theatre in general, however as a person and a teacher his character is seriously lacking. He does his best to make sure everyone understands however he is quite rude and can be very hard to talk to if you're having a problem. He doesn't show up for scheduled office hours sometimes either. Difficult to ask him question
That comment is way off base. I would work with Sholem in the drop of a hat and he is well respected by many in the industry. Google his bio- you don't work all over the world with such impressive companies if nobody wants to work with you. Bitter rater + THF101 sounds like a performance student who couldn't handle his direct, no-nonsense approach
People who have problems with Sholo are people who have problems with work ethic. His classes are brutal and you work to the bone but you learn TONS. A talented designer who knows what he's talking about he respects effort not excuses. Can he rub some people the wrong way- sure, but he was my fave prof and a big reason why I graduated with honours
Due to the enormous lack of respect seen from Sholem towards myself, other students and other members of the theatre profession I find it surprising he is allowed to teach. I have come to the understanding that the reason he teaches is due to the fact that no one in the industry enjoys working with him. He needs a serious attitude adjustment.
