Unhelpful as a teacher and very accusatory in her responses to students. Her lectures are okay and her knowledge of art history is evident and thorough, but she's not an understanding teacher at all... There's no textbook and attending the classes is a good idea, but she's insulting when you talk to her for help or direction.
People who find Julia Scalzo a difficult professor clearly expect to get an A with minimal work and class attendance . The course is a liberal, but you still need to put a bit of work in in order to get a good mark. Attending the lectures is not necessarily a must as content on tests can also be found in her notes, but it does help come test time.
Asking her a question is like the biggest burden in the world for her, she'll insult you and is generally rude to students and claims it to be her "good sense of humour" if you can pick any other course DO IT
Just a generally bad experience, would not recommend.
Julia really knows her information and her passion for Art History really shines through her lectures. So going to lectures is a must!
Go to class!! No textbook as she provides you with everything you need, slides + notes to reinforce lectures. Lectures are awesome and great personality. Breaks down the course so you have a chance to succeed, brilliant teacher with a great sense of humour.
She has a lot of knowledge but I think that she needs to find a better way for us to memorize all that information.
My absolute favourite!! I had her for IRH and she's so so funny! I could see why some people would dislike her, but if you don't talk during her lectures, and do show some interest you'll find that she is the best professor to have.
Scalzo is a great lecturer and she clearly knows what she is talking about. However, if you don't pay attention or do your readings you're going to fail. This class she gave us 5 tests based on 2 o 3 lectures. Midterm essay was confusing but, easily marked if you show her you really tried.
She is an entertaining art history professor, which is definitely what you need in this subject. She cares about her students. She is willing to do Retests for quizzes you have missed. She gives away answers on some of her multiple choice tests. She's always in good spirit! She gives you notes from her lectures. I genuinely love this professor!
